This dissertation deals with the role played by the French army in the Algerian war between 1954 and 1962. The historical analysis is based on the theoretical framework of the elite dynamics, mainly the military elite and its dialectical relationship with the political leadership. In particular, it examines the ways in which the elites exercise power and participation in the formation of foreign policy. The aim of the dissertation is to analyze and interpret the military practices and decisions of the French Army during the period under review, through theoretical approaches and international political developments. Was the French army such a pressure group in the French political decision-making mechanisms for the future of Algeria? To what extent has its historical role during the French colonial era and the period of decolonization of French possessions in Indochina and North Africa influenced its attitude to political developments? And how is the military leaders’ opposition to De Gaulles' decisions and its paramilitary action then, interpreted?
