Norway in the European Economic Area
Summary:
The European Union has always been a pole of attraction for the countries of the old continent, and as long as the European construction was able to support it, the desire for full membership was strengthened. The political elites of Norway, counting on the benefits that would come from membership, were in favor, but the people have been steadily against membership for about 50 years. The bridging of the gap came with the agreement of the European Economic Area, which largely resembles full membership, but remains an agreement.
The agreement, negotiated and signed in 1992 by three contracted EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), has been brought to the scene due to the negotiations of brexit. Finally, reference is made to Turkey and the chances it has to integrate into such an upgraded agreement.
