Institutional developments for the social control of juvenile delinquency, 1974-2004.

The aim of this research and of the present paper that came as a result —and which falls within the field of Sociology of Juvenile Delinquency— was to establish the liaison between juvenile delinquency and the related State Institutions for the control of youth behaviour. As departure point of this examination we set the two following questions: i) how is criminal behaviour defined historically, ii) is it possible that disobedience of the rules is generated by the rules themselves and serves as a dispute of their very essence? The present paper is divided into three parts: the first part explores the historicity of the term “deliquency” and the European and Greek penal systems; the second part aims at documenting the State Institutions for the control of the juvenile delinquency and the qualitative changes that they underwent in Greece during a 30-year-period (1974-2004). To conclude, the third part of the paper presents arguments for the juncture between poverty and criminal justice, as well as for the validity of viewing juvenile delinquency as an actual criticism of the Law.
