“Patriarch Photius and the Armenian Church. The significance of the Letter to Zachariah, Catholicos of Greater Armenia”
Summary:
In the half of the IX cent. Patriarch Photius (858-867, 877-886), Catholicos of Armenia Zachariah (855-876) and prince Ashot I Bagratuni (862-891) began negotiations aiming the restoration of the Eucharistic communication of the Armenian Church with the Orthodox Church. The result of these unifying efforts was the Council of Shirakavan (862), in which the Armenian Church accepted the decisions of the IV Ecumenical Council and the following three Ecumenical Councils. The union of Shirakavan, however, was ephemeral and due to some historical and social circumstances shortly was canceled. Among the documents that Photius and the Armenians exchanged, the Letter to Catholicos Zakhariah has a special value. The Letter survived in medieval Armenian translation. The graduate thesis presents the translation of the Letter from classical Armenian to Modern Greek, with necessary introductory information.
