Attitudes towards refugees / migrants from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan and the rights of ethnic minorities: public school teachers and students of pedagogical university departments
Summary:
In the midst of an economic crisis migration is a key issue for our country because of the large number of immigrants and refugees that has arrived in recent years. The aim of this research is to investigate the attitudes of teachers working in public schools and students of pedagogical faculties on immigrants and refugees from Syria / Iraq / Afghanistan, in relation to levels of acceptance of Rightwing-Authoritarianism beliefs and the extent of their support rights of ethnic minorities. To collect the data for our survey, we used the "Personality and Attitudes Questionnaire" by Neuman & Sram(2015), which has been adopted in Greek and from which the attitude subscale, the minority rights subscale and the rightwing-authoritarianism subscale were studied. In the present study, it was found that there is a negative correlation between each factor of attitudes towards migrants and one of the factors of the ethnic minorities right support scale. Rightwing-Authoritarianism beliefs were moderately positive correlation with attitudes towards immigrants and negative correlation with one of the factors of ethnic minorities’ right support. The respondents who are more religious tend to have higher levels of Rightwing-Authoritarianism and their attitudes toward immigrants and refugees are, also, more negative.
