Assessment of surgical thoracoscopy in the diagnosis and staging of patients with lung cancer
Summary:
Lung cancer is the most common cause of death in the developed world. The
exact definition of the type and stage of the disease is the cornerstone in the
treatment of lung cancer. Multiple methods have been developed to identify and
characterize a lung lesion. Although non - invasive techniques have evolved over the
last few years, especially with the introduction of PET - CT, they have not developed to
provide a reliable diagnosis comparable to that obtained from the biopsy of a surgical
preparation. Thoracoscopy, was introduced in the 1990s and it’s still an alternative
technique that the thoracic surgeon can resort to whenever there is a difficulty in
diagnosing and staging lung cancer especially for a small peripheral node.
MATERIAL AND METHOD
Over a period of two years, from the beginning of 2013 to the
beginning of 2015, 35 cases of patients who were subjected to a
thoracoscopic surgery of suspected lung cancer were studied.
8
Results
14 of the patients, 40%, were subjected to the more extensive
thoracotomy surgery after the diagnose and staging of lung cancer,
while in the remaining 21, 60%, unnecessary thoracotomy along with its
complications has been avoided. In 68.5% of patients biopsy of the
lesion showed malignancy (primary lung tumor or metastasis).
CONCLUSION
Thoracoscopy has proven to be a safe method of investigation of lung
lesions especially for small peripheral lung nodules. It contributes to the
pathological staging of the lesion and its results can not be denied.
Although the number of patients in this study is small its results are in
line with those of larger ranges.
