The role of microwave ablation at the treatment of hepatic metastatic disease of colorectal origin

Microwave Ablation is one of the treatments to the hepatic metastatic disease of colorectal origin, when surgical treatment is not possible and is subsidiary to systematic chemotherapy. The technology of Microwaves is a relatively new technology that promises certain theoretical advantages compared to the existing technology of Radiofrequencies. These theoretical advantages are reflected at the studies that compare retrospectively patient populations that were treated with MWA in comparison to RFA, resulting to lesser local recurrence rates and bigger overall survivor to patients treated with MWA. Up to now there are no randomized trials that compare MWA to surgical resection. Thus the use of MWA is considered to be supplementary to the surgical resection and the systematic chemotherapy.
Our experience has shown the safety and the efficacy of the technique. Furthermore it has shown a statistically significant correlation between the initial number of metastases and the liver recurrence, as well as the overall recurrence. These results are in accordance to data from the international literature.
