Management of natural disasters in museums and archaeological sites
Summary:
The aim of master thesis is to present and describe through literature review the procedure of disaster and emergency risk planning in museums and archaeological sites around the world which face multiple potential natural disasters. Floods, earthquakes, wildfires and hurricanes pose major threats to human lives and valuable cultural heritage resources. Many actions have been undertaken by international and national organizations in order to grow awareness of the vulnerability, uniqueness and value of cultural collections to the various stakeholders. The preservation and protection of the cultural heritage is a crucial issue that needs attention and special measures must be taken in order to minimize damage to their properties. The development of a disaster planning is a coordinated process that provides a guide to the procedures of preparedness, prevention, response and recovery responsibilities of a diverse group of people in integrated management of natural disasters in the broader cultural heritage sector.
The presented facts and impacts of devastating fires of 26th August, 2007 on the Archaeological Site of Olympia revealed the necessity of undertaking immediate measures so as to protect soil erosion, maintain diversity and restore the environment in order to enhance the resistance against forest fires and potential floods in future.
