Summary:
Using the word flood, we describe the situation of usually dry areas, which are covered by water for a certain period. Floods are the result of the natural phenomena interaction, the basin conditions mainly due to land use and the natural or anthropogenic drainage system canalize. In smaller rivers or torrents depending on the extent basin area catchments, flash floods may appear after intense local rainfall, which are not usually predictable and can cause extensive disasters.
The present study refers to the technical interventions of adjustment that were made for flood protection on specific sections in torrents "Platanorema" and "Kyparissorema" of the Potamoula Local Community of Agrinio Municipality witch are flown into the Zervas river that is a tributary of the Acheloos River. These technical interventions were necessary after the lethal flood event in the area on the 2nd October of 2008 in order to protect the areas which are surround of the torrents or are downstream of them.
The study will mention the actions that the former Municipality of Parakampylia and the current Municipal Unit of the Municipality of Agrinio took after the disaster during the phase of the response in order to activate the state mechanism and to get the necessary emergency firms carried out. Also, will be presented the Agrinio Municipality actions and the ongoing actions to mitigate the adverse consequences in the ecosystem of the area. Their purpose was to improve the resilience of the local community. Managing properly the allocated funds during the rehabilitation phase has been achieved the reduction of risk and vulnerability. These funds were allocated to scientific research, study and construction of appropriate flood defence projects in order to ensure the safe drainage and guidance of the torrents floods flow.
In addition, the calculation of the maximum flood flow and the calculation of the hydraulic adequacy of the torrents’ cross section are presented in detail, for their delimitation. For the demarcation of the torrents, the appropriate technical works were also calculated in the non-functioning sections. The technical works were made in three sections in the torrent Platanorema and in a part of the torrent Kyparissorema. Severe floods were often observed in these sections. Finally, the project was constructed and the wet cross section and the drainage capacity of the mainstream bed were increased.
The Study is completed by proposing the construction of mountain hydrological horticultural interventions of adjustment with the purpose of further reducing flood risks in the greater area of Potamoula for better functioning on the flood defence works that have already been built.
