The present thesis discusses the issue of the obligation to pay hire/freight and the legal consequences of non compliance. The objective of this endeavor is to study the issue in reference to continental jurisdictions as well as common law jurisdictions, which are represented by greek, french, english and us law respectively. In this context the paper analyses the notion of hire/freight, the different parameters of the obligation to pay hire/freight, as well as the economic and legal consequences of non fulfillment of said obligation, emphasizing on the institution of maritime liens.
