Summary:
The present qualitative study aims to capture the personal lifestories of Syrian refugees with reference to the biographical rupture created by the war. Participants related stories about Syria before and after the beginning of the war, their trip to Greece via Turkey and the Aegean sea, the arrival and experiences in the host country (Greece). Narrative interviews were conducted with six Syrian refugees (3 men & 3 women) aged between 40 and 65 who were residing in Greece from eight months to one and a half years waiting to leave in order to reunify with their families in another European country. The interviews were analyzed on the basis of the narrative thematic analysis (Riessman, 2008) via the dimensions of time, place and interaction between personal, socio-cultural and political. Participants narrated stories from their experiences and the situation in Syria, talked about the difficulties and the sources of support all along their journey that contributed to their resilience, articulated their needs concerning the host country, and talked about their future plans. This study has important implications for counseling prevention and intervention and promotes the principles of social justice which aim to give voice and to empower vulnerable groups as well as to raise awareness.
