Cognitive stress management technique for acne vulgaris.
Summary:
Acne Vulgaris (AV), is one of the most common disorders treated by dermatologists and other health care providers. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial. One of these factors is stress, which influences several dermatological disorders1. Previous experimental studies exploring the effects of stress management in AV have confirmed that reducing stress, especially through cognitive methods, could improve clinical symptoms and repercussions relapse of AV. In this 8-week experimental pilot study, we primarily examined the feasibility of a novel method, dubbed Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention (PSAI) in 30 AV patients.
Design: This is a two-armed 1:1 randomized non-blind experimental study.
Setting: Hospital “A. Syggros”, School of Medicine, University of Athens.
Interventions: PSAI for a period of 8weeks
Main outcomes: Feasibility data and efficacy measures for acne vulgaris
Results: The total sample was comprised of 15 patients in the intervention group (mean age 27.2 ± 6.6) and 15 patients in the control group (mean age 29.1 ± 6.9) all women. The people in the intervention had statistically had a significantly greater improvement possibility of the acne stage in comparison with the control group (RR 3.5, 95% CI 1.5-8.2, p = 0.001). In total, 77.8% of patients in the intervention group improved compared to 22.2% in the control group.
Conclusions: PSAI is a feasible and possibly efficacious stress management method. Future randomized-controlled studies should explore its efficacy in AV.
