Stress in bronchoscopy
Summary:
Focus: The main objective of the study was the comparative assessment of stress levels experienced by the patient, before and after, being subjected to bronchoscopy Content-Methodology: The study involved a sample of 200 adults, visiting the hospital to perform bronchoscopy. Patients were randomized into two groups of 100: the intervention group, who were presented relevant information from doctor and nursing staff. All participants were demographed; their anthropometric and clinical features were taken into account, as well as, bronchoscopy information on medication - anesthesia, and the characteristics of the procedure. Following, anxiety assessment was performed, through the State and Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S). Finally, the complications during the bronchoscopy and up to 24 hours afterward are discussed. Ethical principles of research were strictly adhered to. Data analysis was implemented, using the SPSS 19.0 statistical program. This is a prospective study that took place between June-September 2016
Results/Findings: BMI and stress before bronchoscopy seemed to affect the outcome. Male sex is also associated with higher levels of anxiety after bronchoscopy.
Conclusions: Patient satisfaction is complex and does not seem to be influenced by factors such as patients’ individual characteristics, previous bronchoscopy experience, expectations, and the process itself. The role of nursing stuff did not affect statistically significant the process and the outcome. Moreover, providing major information, by the stuff is necessary. Finally, stress prevention should focus on high-risk groups and populations who present higher risk of psychological distress
