The neuropsychological profile of idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus
Summary:
Recent studies support that idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a common pathology among elderly people, causing cognitive decline. Due to the lack of consensus concerning the precise nature of this cognitive decline, and the increased overlap with other pathologies like Alzheimer’s disease (AD), iNPH is often misdiagnosed. Aim of the present study is to define the neuropsychological profile of iNPH patients and to compare their performance in neuropsychological tasks with AD patients. iNPH patients with concomitant pathologies were excluded from the study, based on their CSF biomarkers profile and other clinical and neuroimaging data. 17 patients with iNPH and 16 patients with AD underwent lumbar puncture and a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. iNPH patients’ performance in neuropsychological tasks was also compared with this of 30 healthy elderly people. Results shown that iNPH patients present a global cognitive decline in comparison with control group, but, in comparison with AD patients, iNPH patients performed better in memory tasks. In particular, iNPH patients scored better in delayed recall of verbal information, using cues to facilitate recall, and also they presented a more preserved learning ability. Results indicate that iNPH patients show impaired recall processes and relatively preserved consolidation of verbal information in comparison with AD patients.
