Intrauterine and perinatal fetal deaths
Summary:
Stillbirth and perinatal mortality are unpleasant outcomes of pregnancy, which affects several women worldwide. Mortality is associated with specific risk factors and some clarified causes, but a big number of deaths remain unexplained. Placental deficiency, fetal growth restriction, advanced maternal age and low gestational age seems to be the most important causes. Other factors associated with stillbirth are infections, some obstetric complications and some maternal illnesses, like gestational diabetes. Simple daily practices, such as improved hygiene and turning towards a healthier lifestyle, clearly help and reduce the mortality rate. The value of prenatal tests is associated with a reduced risk of mortality. Understanding the chain of events involved at perinatal death can help to organize preventive and therapeutic measures the best way. The decision to cause preterm delivery, in order to improve the viability of the fetus, must be balanced by recognizing the need to minimize the damages resulting from premature labor. Taking this decision will remain a challenge for obstetricians and gynecologists.
