Investigating aphasic errors during naming
Summary:
Several studies are focusing on scores on neuropsychological measures that assess naming abilities. However, there are sparse studies focusing on the type of errors that individuals with aphasia produce regardless of their overall performance on a given task.
Objective
To assess the type of errors that individuals with aphasia produce during naming.
Methods and participants
16 patients with acquired aphasia due to a left-lateralized single stroke were recruited. All participants were assessed with a standard aphasia battery (BDAE) and a naming task (BNT). Number and types of errors were annotated and coded in three distinct categories: Semantic, phonemic, and neologisms.
Results
There were no associations between number of errors and overall score. Semantic cueing was more effective in patients who mainly produced phonological errors.
Conclusion
The findings challenge the theoretical assumptions that phonological cues map to phonological processes. Semantic cueing seems to be more effective when patients mainly produce phonological errors.
