Τεμάχη των Ομήρου μεγάλων δείπνων. An analysis of the Iliad in terms of Aristotle's Poetics
Summary:
This paper discusses the special relationship between the Iliad and tragedy. Despite the obvious differences that distinguish epic from tragedy, the comparison of the Iliad with tragedy shows that they have much in common. In particular, this work exemplifies all those exceptional qualities of Homer, which cannot be found in the rest of the epic cycle and predetermine the development of tragedy. Specifically, in terms of μύθος, the Iliad displays - as far as generic conventions permit - all those virtues (unity, an appropriate size, causal sequence) that are characteristics of ευ συνεστώs μύθος of the tragic plot. As for ήθος, it is shown that in the Iliad the poet has created characters fulfilling sufficiently the four conditions that Aristotle raised about the ήθος (χρηστόν, αρμόττον, όμοιον και ομαλόν) and having tragic features. Finally, as far as πάθη are concerned, it is demonstrable that πάθη in the sense of πράξεις φθαρτικαί, not only dominate but also raise έλεον and φόβον of the listener and therefore οικείαν ηδονήν. In conclusion, the analysis of these dramatic elements attempts at showing the tragic spirit of the Iliad.
