Nursing workload and quality of health care services in intensive care unit
Summary:
Introduction: The workload of the nurse consists of the time spent by the nursing staff to perform the activities for which they are responsible, whether directly or indirectly related to patient care.
Aim: The purpose of this work is to investigate whether the workload in the ICU is related to the quality of the nursing care provided, what are the implications and factors that affect the workload in the ICU
Material-Method: A systematic literature review in international databases (Pubmed, Medline, Cinahl, GoogleScholar, Embase, Scopus, Iatrotek). A time limited criteria was applied with respect to the publication of articles (articles published in the last 10 years). Thirteen articles were found that met the criteria for participation in the review.
Results:From the study of the literature and the analysis of the results of the research the burden of nursing work in the ICU has a direct negative correlation with the quality of the provided nursing services to the patients hospitalized in them. There is also a clear impact on the quality of hospital care provided in ICUs due to this increased burden and this is due to specific factors
Conclusions: The Immediate implementation of policies to address the burden of care in ICUs and the improvement of provided nursing services.
