Managment of ventilator associated pneumonia
Summary:
Introduction: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most frequent clinical problems in ICU with an elevated morbidity and mortality
Objective: The aim of this study was the evaluation treatment of VAP in critically ill patients
Material-Method: The systematic review of the bibliography took place in April 2018 and included a search in electronic bibliographic databases. In particular, articles were searched for in the PubMed database, with the following keywords: "vap and treatment", "vap and treatment", "vap and icu" "antibiotic therapy" and a combination of these. The period of the articles was set for the period 2008 to June 2018. The language of the articles was English.
Results Out of all 69 articles, only ten met inclusion criteria. The majority of studies found that early onset of antibiotic treatment has good results in the treatment of ventilator associated pneumonia in critically ill patients. The newest antibiotic regimens did not offer greater and better efficacy compared to broad spectrum antibiotics.
Conclusion: Early onset of antibiotic treatment in patients with VAP improves outcome. More randomized studies are necessary to investigate the efficacy of the various antibiotic regimens in patients with VAP.
