Ageing in Europe: The impact of expditures for elderly people on public debt

The rapid increase of the elderly people, in the upcoming half-century, could have economic and social repercussions, that might not be predictable today. Increased life expectancy, through the evolution of medical science, has brought a gradual change in the structure of global population.
In Europe the phenomenon of aging population is already bold, as there are observed high levels of infertility in its countries. The main purpose of this diploma thesis is to examine the impact on public debt of European countries of public spending on health care, old age pensions and survivors' pensions.
According to the panel data analysis that will be presented below, the public debt of the EU Member States is significantly affected by public expenditure on old age pensions. Moreover, the structure of the pension systems is a key factor, as most public insurance institutions in the Member States of the European Union use the contributions of current insured persons to cover their retirement and health care expenditures.
