The care about minors in Greece : experiences of adoptive parents for adoption.
Summary:
This paper focuses on the social policies adopted by the state towards the protection and care of unprotected minors who have temporarily or permanently been removed from their natural families for various important reasons. Its purpose is to explore adoptive parents’ views on the process of adoption and the feelings they experienced. The study has been based on a qualitative approach using the semi structured interview as a research method. By the means of semi structured interviewing, the authors have sought to discover how the adoptive parents themselves structure their narratives about the adoption process they have followed, as well as the thoughts and feelings they formed before, during and after the completion of the process. The qualitative analysis of the data, resulting from the adoptive parents’ narratives, illustrates the fact that solely contributing to the conception and birth of a child does not qualify two people as parents. True parents are the ones who love a child selflessly and look after the child daily catering for its proper upbringing and education, all of which adoptive parents are well capable of. In addition, according to the adoptive parents’ narratives, the system of state mediated adoption has not sufficiently improved in Greece, with the result that many children are hosted in group homes and prospective adoptive parents are encouraged to favour the channel of private adoption.
