Summary:
The main concern of this study is a religious drama of the 12th century written by Hildegard von Bingen. The literary analysis of the drama interacts with its translational approach so as several aspects of Hildegard's philosophical ethics to come to light. The plot is as follows: Psyche struggles to perceive the meaning of existence as she balances between the guidance of Virtutes and the distractions of Diabolus. Fundamental philosophical questions are raised regarding the human being's purpose to life, the nature of Virtutes, the soul redemption and the eternal conflict between soul and body. Hildegard's ethics are completed by her metaphysics, a christian cosmology which is deeply neoplatonic. Hildegard's neoplatonic origins are evident in the drama and concern to the universe creation, the relation between the sensible and the intelligible, and the role of human in the cosmic order. Part of this order is also Diabolus. The content of the drama guides the reader to the private life of Hildegard so as the cause of the drama synthesis to become conceivable. In this way her point of view about woman and her role in cosmic balance are revealed.
