Translated title:
Loss of Homeland - the unbearable burden . Exile literature during the Third Reich on the example of Stefan Zweig
Summary:
The dissertation entitled Heimatverlust - die untragbare Last. Exilliteratur im Dritten Reich am Beispiel Stefan Zweigs (English: Loss of the Homeland - Unbearable Weight, Exile Literature during the Third Reich, on the example of Stefan Zweig) focuses on a part of the history of German-speaking 20th century literature: the difficult road to the exile of German and Austrian writers who were forced to flee their homeland because of Nazi barbarity in the years 1933-1945 and seek shelter in other countries. With the example of the suicide of the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig and based on his autobiography, the emphasis is on whether the loss of the homeland can lead to so much despair and devastation, that life no longer makes sense. In this context, there is an attempt to parallel the situation in the world today: according to UN figures for 2017, about 65 million people, victims of war, persecution and ecological disaster, live in refugee conditions.
