The existing Archaeological Museum of Sparta. Museological proposal for a new permanent exhibition

The Archaeological Museum of Sparta constitutes a landmark in the city’s history as well as in its archaeological tradition. It now is faced with the exciting challenge of having to reinvent itself, given the Greek Ministry of Culture’s decision to open a new Archaeological Museum in Sparta at a new location. The Archaeological Museum of Sparta boasts to be the first regional museum of the modern Greek state, crediting it with unique esteem among the nation’s archaeological museums. In order for the optimal and most sustainable solution to be reached for the Old Museum’s future, its history, within the city’s rich cultural realm, is being examined in its entirety. Concurrently, the building’s neoclassical architecture together with its exquisite grounds and central location in the modern day city, make it an integral part of its cultural life.
Given the scope for the museum to retain its archaeological identity while simultaneously adopting a more open and interactive spirit, it was necessary to reach out to the local community by means of qualitative research. As such, the proposal made here seeks to retain part of the historical monument’s prior existence while developing new goals, values and potential based on the modern foundations of museology.
