Learning Greek as a second language through CLIL to unaccompanied refugee minors
Summary:
This thesis focuses on the education of unaccompanied minor refugees, particularly adolescents. The aim is to highlight the profile and characteristics of unaccompanied teenagers as well as the way in which their education is provided in Greece. Through interviews with educators, an effort is made to comprehend the situation faced by educators who teach this particular target group. The research also aims to highlight the obstacles and difficulties of the learning process in order to identify the needs for further improvement. In addition, the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method, which combines both language and content learning, is presented. The theoretical framework of CLIL is analyzed and the question of whether it can be applied within the Greek educational system is examined. In particular, it is considered whether this method can be applied to unaccompanied minor refugees in order to detect good teaching practices, to identify any difficulties and to adapt the method to the particular target group. Finally, three learning scenarios are proposed, concerning three different scientific subjects (History, Geography, and Mathematics) of the School Program (Curriculum) of the first grade of High School. In this regard, these scenarios are based on the CLIL method adapted for unaccompanied minor refugees.
