Cyberspace as a "place" for political participation of youth: Digital divide in Greece

This work is concerned with exploring the digital divide among young people (17-29 years old) in Greece through a survey of online questionnaires conducted in the summer of 2018 (N = 540). The manifestations of digital inequality analyzed are the social and democratic digital divide in cyberspace. The social gap focuses on the variations in user uses of the internet, while the democratic gap is related to the inequality of internet use for political purposes. In our research we are creating an indicator that expresses the democratic divide and consists of ten variables related to political participation in cyberspace. The findings show that there is a differentiation in user activities based on their social and demographic characteristics, while the democratic digital divide beyond them also appears to be related to factors such as political interest, political efficiency and accidental exposure to political content on the internet.
