Modern islamic terrorism is a threat which is more dangerous than any previous time period; the case of iraq and syria
Summary:
The Islamic State has been defeated militarily, but modern Islamic terrorism of the Sunni Salafi type remains more dangerous than ever before. This thesis will analyze the evolution of Islamic terrorism in Iraq after the US invasion of 2003, and in Syria after the outbreak of the 2011 civil war, since the events in these two countries allowed Islamic terrorism to evolve into a much more dangerous threat, as was shown with the rapid rise of of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Jabat al Nusra and the Islamic State, which became a de facto terrorist state. The general causes which enabled the rise of Islamic terrorism will also be analyzed, such as the instability in many countries of the muslim world, the evolution of technology, and the evolution of the nature of Islamic terrorism. The thesis will reach the conclusion that the management of terrorism must be carried out in an interdisciplinary manner, since the erradication of terrorist and terror organizations is only part of the solution. The management of instability and sociopolitical factors which enable Islamic terrorism to flourish is just as important, and a long term strategy must be adopted.
