Translated title:
The International Protection of Cultural Heritage: The Case of ISIS
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the consequences and the motives beneath the unprecedented extremist attacks against the cultural heritage of Syria and Iraq by the self-proclaimed Islamic State and evaluate the reaction of the international community upon that matter. More particularly, in the first part of this thesis there is a critical review of the existing international framework concerning the destruction of cultural objects during armed conflicts, their illicit trafficking as well as the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and cultural diversity. The new challenges that have problematized and have inevitably widened the scope of international protection are also delineated. In the second part, there is a thorough analysis of the Islamic State’s profile and its perpetration of the Iraqi and Syrian cultural heritage. Finally, there is an evaluation of the international response to these events and an exploration of the new horizons that are discerned for the protection of cultural heritage after the adoption of the crucial Resolution 2347 by the Security Council.
