The consequences of the Greek Economic crisis on Greece’s educational system
Summary:
The economic crisis that all western world faces for a decade now, constitutes a major factor of social change that has negative impact to all range of people’s lives. As a result, education could not stay intact. Greece, as a part of the western system found itself in the swirling of severe economic crisis and is unquestionably the Eurozone member-state that was hit most severely by it. Thus, Greek education has been dealing with numerous serious problems ever since. The present study attempts to investigate and analyze the situation in the educational system during the years of great recess and present the repercussions of economic hardships on it. It will even try to propose solutions for the improvement of educational reality overall. The method used is bibliographical and the research was conducted during the period June 2018 to September 2018. The results presented indicate that the economic crisis affected severely the Greek school community in multiple ways, both in human resource level as well as in logistics and infrastructure. People afflicted were not only students but also teachers, parents and society in general. As the most serious problems were emphasized the cuts in logistic costs and in salaries, the shrinking number of teachers and their increasing old age, school mergers and disestablishments, increase of working hours and decrease in recruitment, obligatory relocation of teachers, large number of students per class, insufficient alimentation and heating, psychological traumas, aggressive behavior and brain drain. However, a few positive consequences were highlighted such as voluntary actions of solidarity and charitable work of the whole community.
The most needed actions to soothe the repercussions of the problem are the increase of funds for educational purposes, the rationalization of expenditure and the reeducation of teachers so as to respond better to their role.
