Depression in diabetic patients- biochemical background, literature review
Summary:
Diabetes mellitus and depression are two common diseases with an ever increasing prevalence. They are accompanied by high morbidity and mortality and are major public health problems. The coexistence of these two disorders leads to an even greater deterioration in the health of the patients. The relationship between diabetes and depression appears to be bidirectional. The study of the common biological background and pathophysiological mechanisms has not been conclusive. In this study, a literature review is carried out on the underlying mechanisms of the pathogenesis of depression in diabetic patients. The most frequent mechanisms which seem to be involved are: common genetic risk factors, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation, immunological and inflammatory factors, neurotrophic and neuroendocrine dysfunction as well as intestinal dysbiosis which has recently been reported. It has been attempted to transfer these hypotheses to studies targeting the common treatment of diabetes mellitus and depression.
