Summary:
This dissertation is divided into two parts: Part I. Antarctica as a territory of controversy and Part II. Antarctica as a territory of cooperation. In the first part, the claims of the States in Antarctica are analyzed (past and present) along with the several theories that were used as a justification of those claims. Part II focus on the first attempts of States for the internationalization of the Antarctic issue, the legal framework and the issue of Antarctica in the UN and finally includes an evaluation of the Antarctic Treaty System and the legal framework of Global Commons.
