Suicide and Euthanasia: Bioethical issues of autonomy and beneficence
Summary:
The ideological dispute for the ethical acceptance of euthanasia continues to concern and divide the international community with the same tension. The issue is complicated, as it calls on us to define significant human values, such as human life, autonomy, dignity, benevolence etc.. Through the approach and evaluation of the perspectives and the arguments invoked by both sides of the ideological debate, the aim of this paper is to understand and redefine their perceptions, in order to demonstrate the points of convergence and their common values and convictions. Through the search of the distance that separates the two sides, the intention is to prove that this may not be so insurmountable, and therefore the gap can be bridged through honest dialogue, mutual address to dissenters, and respect of their rational beliefs. By recognizing the common foundations of the moral dissent, a common framework of unanimity and consensus is sought, which will guarantee the protection of the privacy and autonomy of each individual, and also the coexistence under the conditions of freedom and equality.
