The Orchestration in the Symphonic Works of the 2nd Viennese School composers (Schoenberg, Berg, Webern) and the aesthetics of expressionism
Summary:
The aim of the present thesis is the orchestration analysis of Schoenberg’s Orchesterstücke op. 16, Berg’s [Orchesterstücke] op. 6 and Webern’s [Orchesterstücke]op. 6 and op. 10, in order to highlight: i) the way that the second Viennese School composers (Schoenberg, Berg and Webern) used the orchestra, ii) their differentiation from their predecessors, especially those of the German romantic tradition (Wagner, Brahms, Strauss and Mahler) and iii) the relevance between orchestration style and the features of expressionism in painting, of the same period, the latter being shaped mainly by Klee and Kandinsky. These works were selected because they both are the only specimens of absolute symphonic music of the period under examination (1909 – 1915) but also because they mark a milestone closing the heavy and exuberant sound of the German romantic orchestra. In order to achieve the objectives of this doctoral dissertation, it was considered appropriate to analyze form, thematic material as well as rhythm so as to understand the way in which orchestration is associated with the specific structural elements.
