The Early Bronze Age Pottery at Aigion: The case study of Minasian plot
Summary:
Τhe main topic of this dissertation is the EBA pottery at Aigion, using as case study the archaeological material from the Minasian plot. The pottery related to the excavation of this plot is dated to the EH IIB period. During this period significant changes occur in many cultural fields, including pottery production, which is affected by the adoption and the spreading of the Lefkandi I-Kastri group at several settlements in mainland Greece, such as Aigion. These changes are often related with destructions at several settlements in mainland Greece.
Aiming to approach these aspects in Aigion, we focused on the pottery of this particular plot, after setting the general characteristics of the EBA in Aigialea and analysing the stratigraphy and architecture of the Minassian plot. According to changes we found in the construction and organization of the architectural remains, we distinguished the existence of two main periods (A and B).
As far as pottery is concerned, we distinguished two ceramic phases (I and II) based on the gradual changes we observed. The largest part of pottery is associated with the Korakou cultural group. A few shapes of the Lefkandi I-Kastri group were found as well. We also identified shapes and features related to the influence of the Lefkandi I-Kastri group, which we characterized as hybrids.
Taking into account these features, we interpreted pottery at Aigion a suitable example for the theory of cultural hybridity, drawing important information on the adoption of the Anatolian tradition in Aigion. At the same time, we examined the ceramic production of Aigion, ascertaining that, despite the diversity that characterizes it, there are indications for the existence of specialized potters.
Based on the data from the pottery analysis and observations concerning architectural features, we argue that, although there are changes in architecture and pottery, they do not seem to be associated with cultural discontinuities. On the contrary, we notice the importance of maintaining existing traditions and gradually adopting new ones. In a wider context, we highlight the special role of Aigion in the Corinthian Gulf region.
