The contribution of e-Government to local development: the electronic services provided by the Municipality of Chania and their evolution over the last five years.

Undoubtedly, it is a fact that nowadays the citizens’ demands for public services is increased, seeking both faster and better quality services. Part of these needs is gradually covered by the establishment of the concept of e-Governance in Greece. In the present paper entitled: “The contribution of e-Governance to the Local Development: the electronic services provided by the Municipality of Chania and their evolution over the past five years”, an attempt is made to present the concept, the basic principles and the elements of e-Governance as well as the import stages and its benefits to the development of the public sector. Specifically, in the first chapters, the development of e-Governance in Europe is presented, as well as the initial programs used to achieve this goal .Then, there is a presentation of e-Governance in Greece, the initial stages of its implementation and the most important actions planned for its adoption by almost all public services. Afterwards, the implementation of the actions above in the Local Development Organization, is presented through joint programs such as “The Transparency”, the “Citizens Register” , the “National Electronic Public Procurement System” and the “Central Electronic Public Procurement Registry”. However, an extensive analysis is carried out for the Municipality of Chania and the e- services provided to the citizens through various electronic programs, aiming the best service and the development of local community. A presentation is made not only of these electronic services but also of their evolution during the last five years. Also, at the end of the paper an attempt is made to evaluate all of these electronic services provided by the Municipality concerned.
