Narrative discourse and multifunctionality of discourse markers: An analysis on the newer Greek novel.
Summary:
Discourse markers have constituted a subject of research from the sciences of Textlinguistics, Pragmatics, Semantics and Psycholinguistics and they have been connected with the criteria of textuality and specifically with cohesion, coherence, intentionality and acceptability, as well as with the processes of understanding and interpretation of texts. Discourse markers play a multiple role, mainly pragmatic, as they contribute to the sequence of meanings of Deep Structure, they function as linguistc signals which “restrain” the implicatures and thus limit the assumptions that the receiver of the message should do, they contribute to the general organization and the sequentiality of the discourse through its segmentation in smaller units or they constitute markers of discourse with metalinguistic function. A lot of research has been done on the use of discourse markers especially in the spontaneous/ unplanned oral discourse. In the present dissertation we focus on their function in the narrative discourse of literature and specifically in the genre of newer Greek novel.
