Summary:
Modern tourism is the main pillar of our national economy and development policy, with positive effects on the degraded region.
The purpose of this postgraduate thesis is to study the alternative forms of tourism that have been developed in the Municipality of Apokoronas of the regional unit of Chania.
An incentive to choose this destination is the fact that it is of special interest, thanks to the unique flora and fauna and the temperate climate prevailing in the area. Due to its rich historical heritage, its environmental and cultural resources (monuments, churches, archaeological sites, traditional settlements of particular archaeological interest, cultural events, customs, Cretan cuisine etc.), it is an attractive tourist destination, all seasons of the year. The visitor is attracted by the fact that he can find all the geomorphological features (sea, mountain, plain, lake, rivers, forests), concentrated in a small area. He can do climbing, cycling, downhill canyons and then swim in the award-winning spotless waters. Ideal climatic conditions are suitable for winter-summer tourism. Alternative forms of tourism, such as agrotourism and rural tourism, have been developed in the region.
Also, an attempt will be made in order to look for these forms of alternative tourism that have growth prospects, always based on the particular social and physical characteristics of the Municipality of Apokoronas.
The aim of all the above is to establish the Municipality of Apokoronas as an alternative tourist destination 365 days a year.
