The phenomenon of Iconoclasm. Thorough examination of the second period (815-843), as it is stamped on the saints' Lives.
Summary:
The period of Iconoclasm is an issue that has attracted the interest of many scholars of byzantine history both in the past and in modern times. The religious quarrel and the strives between the two warring sides were a hindrance to the prevalence of a climate of concord within the empire during the Middle Byzantine Era. Thus, the second phase of the Iconoclasm phenomenon, as stamped on the narrations of the saints’ Lives, is examined in this master work.
In the first chapter there is a reference to the hagiological texts, since they were the subject of spiritual pleasure for the religious persons. In our days, many of these texts are considered to be valuable sources by the historians. Through their narrations the eminent social model of the Byzantine World is expressed in an eloquent way. The facts, that reflect the everyday reality, are also presented.

Following the master thesis, mention is made to the icons and the spread of their worship in the Byzantine Empire. In the second chapter, the focus is on the beginning of the iconoclastic movement, which dates back to the 4th century. In addition, are outlined the incidents, that marked the outbreak of the first phase of this phenomenon in the 8th century. Detailed information is also provided on the resurgence of the theological controversy during Leo V’s governing and for the years that followed the Triumph of Orthodoxy.
The third chapter of the work analyzes the Lives of the saints, who were active in the 9th century. Some of these image worshippers were David, Symeon and George of Mytilene, Methodios and Nikephoros of Sebaze. Other equally emblematic figures were Patriarch Nikephoros, Theodore of Stoudios and Theodore Graptos, as well as Theodora, the widow of Emperor Theophilos.

The main subject of this master thesis is the evaluation of the information given in the hagiological texts regarding the iconoclast emperors. The interest is largely focused on the unorthodox measures taken by the majority of them against the dissidents. The hagiological texts bear witness to the tense climate of the time, following the interventionist ecclesiastical policy adopted by the Byzantine rulers and the refusal of a large crowd of believers to confront the religious line of Constantinople.
The work is completed with the presentation of the conclusions, that emerged from the thorough study of the saints’ Lives. It is clear that, these texts are usually written according to specific narrative rules. In addition, it turns out that the efforts of the iconoclasts in the 9th century were inferior to their predecessors’, as far as the theological zeal and the dynamism are concerned.
