Τhe relationship between paternal parenting style and adolescents’ self-esteem and peer relationships
Summary:
The present study investigates the relationship between paternal typology and the self-esteem of Greek adolescents as well as their relationships with their peers. It has been investigated, in particular, whether the authoritative, authoritarian and permissive paternal parenting style is related to adolescents’ self-esteem and their relationships with peers, taking into account the gender differences. 120 students of public high schools in Greece (in Attica and Aitoloakarnania) took part in the survey, while data collection was carried out through Parental Authority Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment. The results show that authoritative paternal parenting style is statistically significant with adolescents’ self-esteem and relationships with peers. Secondly, both authoritarian and permissive paternal parenting style are statistically significant in relation to adolescents’ alienation by their peers. However, they are not related to adolescents’ self-esteem or peer trust and communication. Thirdly, adolescents’ gender is significantly associated with authoritative and authoritarian paternal parenting style, as well as with adolescents’ trust they have towards their peers. On the other hand, there is no gender difference in permissive paternal parenting style and the dimensions of peer communication and alienation. These results, therefore, are discussed in relation to previous findings addressing some differences concerning to the relationship between paternal parenting style, Greek adolescents’ self-esteem and their peer relationships.
