Expression of PRL-3 in endometriosis
Summary:
Infertility has become very popular nowadays affecting a large number of couples who wish to have children. The reasons behind infertility vary and it could be either the male or the female part of the equation. However, endometriosis which is a very common benign illness that affects a lot of women seems to be directly implicated with infertility. The main characteristic of endometriosis is the presence of endometrial tissue outside the endometrial cavity of the women, mainly in the abdomen or the ovaries. Complications can be abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and most commonly infertility. Our group wished to study the molecular mechanisms that lie behind endometriosis therefore we looked for proteins that play significant role in several cellular mechanisms like cell proliferation and cell migration. One of the proteins involved in cell migration, adhesion and invasion is PRL-3 ( phosphatase of regenerating liver- 3). In the present study, we detected and compared PRL-3 expression in endometriomas and normal endometria of patients with endometriosis. In most of the samples we found no difference in their expression. However, there were 2 samples were PRL-3 was expressed in higher amounts in normal endometria and 2 other samples where it had higher expression in endometriomas. Further research needs to be done in order to understand if the clinical stage of endometriosis or the type of sample that was collected is responsible for this result.
