Summary:
On September 2001, an anthrax attack occured within the United States. Letters, containing anthrax spores were mailed to media companies and congressional offices. Since then, the US government has spent over $ 50 billion on biodefense, including innovative technologies-such as the BioWatch system- and research on developing new vaccines and treatment protocols. The epidemiological surveillance system was upgraded as well.
Despite the countermeasures taken, there are still deficiencies in US biodefense strategy. Both US government and scientific community make efforts to show of shortcomings and provide solutions in developing comprehensive and effective biodefense strategies. USA should cooperate with other countries, facing similar threats, in order to develop such strategies, which could improve the biodefense globally
