Populism and Brexit: Comparative analysis of the stance of Trade Unions and grassroot groups based on profession on Facebook
Summary:
Populism has increasingly been creeping back into our public life - there are some who would argue it never left it - shaping our perceptions, hopes, fears and most importantly, our political stance. The chaos of Brexit, in particular, has been viewed by scholars and the media as the triumph of populism, and a convenient scapegoat for the political elites who accused every ill befallen the UK on the populism of the opposing side. This study aimed to address the influence of populism by examining its micro-level, the populism propagated by professional grassroots movements set up specifically for debating Brexit. By comparing two periods of intense activity, the weeks prior to June 23rd, 2016, and weeks before November 25th, 2018, I analyze 400 posts for each period, comparing the group under examination to their respective Trade Unions. In addition, based on collective action theory this study developed a set of frames that aspire to be useful in approaching populism from a different angle. Contrary to established theory, grassroots movements did not turn up to be more radical than their institutional interlocutors, while the pervasive nature of populism seems to employ unlikely socio-economic groups to reach a wider audience.
