Changes in the epidemiological data of patients hospitalized in the ICU of Patra’s General Hospital.
Summary:
Background: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is the department of the hospital that provides close monitoring and specialized treatment for severely ill patients. Due to developments in modern technology and life expectancy increase, the assessment of the profile of patients admitted in the ICU has been of great interest.
Objectives: To evaluate and to compare possible alterations in the epidemiological data of patients hospitalized in the ICU of Patra’s General Hospital, Greece, before (1998-2002) and during the economic crisis (2011-2015).
Methods: This is a qualitative type retrospective study. The ICU records of Patra’s General Hospital were used for the data collection between the periods from January 1998 to December 2002 and from January 2011 to December 2015
Results: Over time, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of elderly patients admitted in the ICU, as well as an increase in patients with pathological causes in relation to car accidents. Also, during the crisis period, patient hospitalization days, ICU mortality rates and deaths from dysfunction of more than one organ increased. Regarding their medical history, the number of patients with an individual history in more than to two systems who were receiving pharmaceutical treatment increased during the crisis. Furthermore, arterial hypertension prevailed over both periods of time.
Conclusion: The economic crisis has affected the profile of patients who were admitted to the ICU of Patra’s General Hospital.
