Summary:
Introduction: The aging of the nursing workforce is a global phenomenon. Aging as an inevitable biological procedure changes the human organism. At the same time, the demands of work change remarkable during life. These two facts are the reason why many nurses would leave the profession in the next years.
Aim: The aim of this study was to review the relationship between age and work ability of nursing staff.
Methology: A systematic review of the published literature was conducted using the electronic databases CINAHL, SCOPUS, Cohrane, Pubmed,Google scholar, Iatrotek. A total of 36 research articles were included in this review.
Results: Regardless of their country, older nurses have lower work ability as this measured by well established research tools scores.
Conclusions: The study showed that there is relation between aging and work ability in nurses. However, it is necessary that new studies should be designed globally because of the different working conditions.
