Summary:
Blood donation is essential for health systems worldwide. Blood donation requires checking the blood for transmitted diseases, in order to ensure blood transmission’s safety. Hence, successful blood control is essential for public health. Blood donation is carried out, mostly, on a volunteer basis. Blood donors aim either to replace the blood for a friend or relative either to donate blood in general, based on their altruistic motivation. In Greece, blood donation is quite widespread compared to other European countries, although the amount of donated blood is insufficient, due to the high prevalence of thalassemia. In general, higher rates of blood donation have been recorded for the developed world compared to developing countries. The most serious challenge for blood donation in the developed world concerns population aging, which reduces the number of those who can donate blood, while the most serious concerns for the developed world have to do with the low levels of skills that health professionals have, the negative attitudes of the people, their lack of knowledge concerning blood donation and the poor level of health systems’ organization. The development of motivation for blood donation is essential both for the developed and the developing world countries, in order to increase the proportion of blood donators and the total amount of blood donated.
