Multidominance structures. The syntax of wh-questions in Greek
Summary:
This dissertation studies the syntactic derivation of wh-questions in Greek, with emphasis on two complex wh-structures with coordination: ATB-questions and wh&wh-questions. Both structures exhibit mismatches between phonetic realization and semantic interpretation. These are due to the fact that one or more elements are pronounced only once but they are interpreted in more positions of each structure. The phenomenon gives the impression of a derivation with ellipsis, but this study takes a different approach by making use of multiple dominance to explain the properties of the Greek data. With respect to ATB-questions, it is proposed that their semantic and morphosyntactic properties support a symmetric derivation with multiple dominance of the wh-phrase, which is extracted from TP-conjuncts. Moreover, several arguments are put forth against the asymmetric analyses and the analyses with ellipsis. In a similar vein, the properties of wh&wh-questions in Greek are shown to support a derivation with coordination of CPs, which share all their constituents except for the wh-phrases. Due to the extensive crosslinguistic variation of the structure, the position of Greek in the relevant typology is studied. The proposed derivations of the two wh-structures in question provide a strong argument in support of external Remerge. In light of this, the syntax of simple wh-questions is examined and a derivation with internal Remerge of the wh-phrase is proposed. Finally, it is supported that both ATB-questions and wh&wh-questions are multidominance structures which combine both forms of Remerge (internal and external).
