Investigation of depression in people who have been abused: correlations with social capital and coping strategies
Summary:
The purpose of the research is to investigate the phenomenon of abuse in relation to depression and coping strategies, aiming at developing appropriate prevention programs and appropriate intervention to reduce abuse or even eliminate the phenomenon.
457 people from Greece and abroad participated in this survey. The methodology for the data collection was quantitative and follows a cross-study design. Statistical analysis performed with SPSS 22. The questionnaires used were an improvised demographic information questionnaire, Self Anxiety Scale-SAS and Brief Cope. The results of the survey showed that specific demographic factors - such as the educational level - and depression are positively related to people who reported a history of violence. Also, whether or not a person reported a history of violence to a significant other, seemed to have a statistically significant effect on the depression score. According to the results of coping strategies, it seemed that effect positively strategies, such as use of emotional support and the positive reframing, helping abused people managing the phenomenon.
