Resilience and Post Traumatic Stress disorder in people who have been abused: the role of social and psychological factors
Summary:
In the present study we examined the role of resilience and the appearance of post traumatic stress disorder in people who have been abused. Furthermore, the study investigated the coping strategies that the abused people adopt. The survey sample involved 457 people coming from Greece and abroad. For data collection was used a quantitative methodology. The questionnaires used were the Resilience scale 25, the Davison Trauma Scale, Brief Cope and an improvised questionnaire for demographic information. The results showed that the gender affects significantly the appearance of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Also, a statistically significant effect linked with the age that the person had been abused, namely in childhood, adulthood or both. Still, we found a statistically significant positive relationship between the numbers of acts of violence had been in adulthood and score in PTSD scale. Moreover, the resilience was related statistically significant negative with PTSD. Finally, on coping strategies, it seemed that there was a statistically significant positive relationship between PTSD and denial, substance use, and avoidance of guilt. Instead, they found a statistically significant negative relationship between PTSD and use of active response, positive reframing, and design.
