Summary:
The present master’s thesis entitled "Emilio Cecchi and the antiquities of Crete" presents in detail and highlights the importance of the Italian writer's travel impressions during his visit (1934) to the island of Crete during the interwar period. An attempt in this direction was made to reconstitute the vast information provided by the Florentine, that was scattered in the book Et in Arcadia Ego about the archaeological sites, monuments and finds - mainly of the Heraklion Museum - which were also the main reason for him to visit the island.
As a result, was extensively commented on and enriched with more information on the antiquities (mobile and immovable finds) the chapters that was referring to the island, (seven of the eight chapters dedicated to Crete), which the author observed and commented on either by brief or by making a brief description of them. It was deemed necessary that the described monuments and other findings should fit into a more specific historical and archaeological context in order for the reader to obtain a complete picture of the ancient and especially of the Minoan world as reflected in the text of Cecchi. Specifically they are described the archaeological sites of Knossos, Phaistos, Gortyn and Agia Triada, the findings of the Heraklion Museum and the Morosini Fountain that were visited by the Italian traveler, as well as the Venetian fortification of Heraklion, which the writer remarked upon arriving at the port of the city, while is also analyzed the Minoan trade. Comments and are made on the criticism made by the Italian author for the rehabilitation interventions carried out by the English archaeologist Arthur Evans at the palace of Knossos. The description of antiquities followed the order in which they were recorded by the author by chapter. For the complete understanding of the study, excerpts of his text have been translated, which refer to the ancient monuments and more generally to archaeological issues.
The study shows that Emilio Cecchi approached the archaeological issues almost accurately, he was a devotee of Minoan civilization and with his writing contributed to his dissemination. For the above reasons he must be considered as one of the most important travelers of the 20th century who visited Crete.
