Summary:
This thesis is dealing with the subject of the legal and institutional status quo concerning the independence and the accountability of the supervisors of the financial sector, mainly central banks, towards elected officials. It is a comparative research on the independence and democratic accountability status of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, the European Central Bank and the Greek Central Bank. Based on the findings of tyhe study, it is suggested that within the context of the international financial system and the constitutional pluralism, national judges stand as the last effective and efficient veto player towards the status of the central banks independence.
